Letter book of Captain George T. Bassett, an officer in the Commission of Subsistence. The letter book documents correspondence relating to the distribution of rations to troops and destitute citizens in central Virginia from July 24 to Nov. 11, 1865 and in South Carolina from Dec. 26, 1865 to June 19, 1866. Includes correspondence with field officers and local administrators on the provisions being supplied and information on the initial efforts of the Bureau of Freedmen.

Scope and Contents Records.  Contains correspondence, school records and ephemera sent from teachers of the 7th District of the American Freedmen's Aid Commission and Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Association to District Superintendent Jacob W. Shoemaker between Apr. 2 and Sept. 12, 1866.  Includes program and admission ticket to an exhibition of Camp Davis Colored School (2 items), financial statements (16 items), monthly teacher reports (4 items), and a report from all 26 schools, containing name of school,...
