Summary Note

Dr. Mahaffy, a professor at Millersville University in the Anthropology/Sociology Department, is interviewed by Alex Perez. Dr. Mahaffy describes living in Haverhill, Massachusetts for eleven years before moving to Lancaster in 2000. She touches on the ethnic background of Haverhill as well as the problems with crime. She then talks about the fact that her mother in Panamanian and the experience of going to Panama for the 1st time when she was an adult. She compares her experiences of visiting Panama with visiting Mexico. She also talks about how her ancestors moved from Puerto Rico to Panama to find a better way of life, eventually moving to the Canal Zone. She also talks about what she likes and dislikes about living in Lancaster, including the School District, drugs, crime, race relations and the arts.
