Conditions Governing Use

Archives and Special Collections adheres to the provisions of the 1976 Copyright Act and amendments, and follows the minimum standards of educational fair use established under Section 107. In applying these standards, Archives and Special Collections will copy up to 10% of a copyrighted work if the copy is to be used for the purpose of private study, scholarship or research. The department will not copy for the purpose of public performance. Physical condition permitting, the department will copy more than 10% of a copyrighted work only with the written permission of the copyright holder. Multiple copies are not permitted under fair use. For authored works created since 1978, copyright lasts from the creation of the work until 70 years after the author's death. The expiration term for corporate, anonymous, or pseudonymous works is 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever occurs first. For works published before 1978, with a copyright notice, the maximum duration of copyright protection is 75 years. Works published before 1978 without a copyright notice are assumed to be in the public domain. Since March 1, 1989, a copyright notice is no longer necessary. Archives and Special Collections reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Mountwaybia Club was founded in 1924 by a group of women seeking to establish a small literary club in western Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, founded "on the principles of friendship, culture, and service." The organization takes its name from the two communities, Mountville and Columbia, from which its members originally came, combined with the name of the Lincoln Highway which runs between the two. Initially the organization was known as The Mountwaybia Friendly Club, but this was shortened to The Mountwaybia Club in 1932. The club was founded at the suggestion of Mrs. W.P. Brenneman who had moved to Lancaster County from Auburn, Maine, where she had belonged to a similar organization. The club had fifteen charter members with Mrs. J.W. Zehring serving as the first president. Over the years, the days and times of the meetings have changed but they have been held in members' homes approximately twice per month from October through March or April of each year. Meetings include a short business meeting and a book report or research paper presented by a member followed by tea and refreshments. Each member is expected to present a program and act as hostess at least once each year.

Abstract

This collection documents the history and activities of the Mountwaybia Club of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, through the group's constitution, by-laws, history, minutes, photographs, membership rolls, scrapbook, yearbooks, publications, and correspondence. ‡b From its founding in 1924, the Mountwaybia Club has maintained records of the group's history and activities. The club history begins with the first meeting in 1924 and continues through 2000. In the early years, the history volumes contain detailed hand-written descriptions of club meetings including summaries of the books and topics discussed. Correspondence, newspaper clippings and other materials are also inserted in these volumes. From 1966 through 1987, the history volumes consist primarily of newspaper clippings regarding the club's activities supplemented by program announcements and photographs. Beginning in 1989 and continuing through 2000, the club history is composed of printed announcements of meeting topics plus officer and member names and numerous photographs. During the same period that the club history was being maintained, minutes of each meeting were also prepared. In the early years, the minutes focused on discussions and actions taken at business meetings with brief mentions of the report or research paper presented to the members. From approximately the late 1950s through the present, the minutes include summaries of both actions taken at the business meeting and of the books or topics discussed as part of the program. The photograph collection includes studio portraits of many club members as well as snapshots of club meetings and activities. From 1924 through 1952, a volume listing the membership, the topics of each year's meetings, and each member's individual assignments was maintained in addition to the information on those topics provided in the minutes and history. The collection also includes a roster detailing attendance at meetings from 1989 through 2004. The scrapbook documents the activities of the club and of club members from 1999 through 2008. It includes photographs of activities, newspaper articles about the organization and about individual members and copies of the club yearbook for 2002/2003, 2005/2006 and 2007/2008.
