Summary Note

Background note: Smedley Darlington was the founder and proprietor of the Ercildoun Seminary, located in East Fellowfield in Chester County. The school was created as a school for boys in 1851 but converted to a girls school three years later. It remained in operation until demolished by a tornado in 1877. The school was rebuilt in West Chester and renamed the Darlington Seminary.
