Summary Note
Background notes. The Joseph, George and Aunt Elizabeth that Sallie mentions were most likely her cousins Joseph and George Bolton and her Aunt Elizabeth Bolton, who resided in Frankford (now part of Philadelphia). Sallie traveled to Safe Harbor on the Conestoga Canal (also known as the Susquehanna Slack Water Canal) that had an entry point a mile south of Millersville. The iron works and rolling mills described by Sallie was Safe Harbor Furnace and the Reeves, Abbot & Company Mills, which was located just north of the town near the Conestoga Creek. Charles Malhorn, the father of Normal School student Mary Malhorn, owned the Safe Harbor hotel where she had "refreshments".
