Summary Note
Background note. Lewis Marshall was a family friend from Newlin Township in Chester County. J. Newton Pierce was a family acquaintance from Liberty Square in Lancaster County. Ellis P. Townsend was a student at the school from Chatham in Chester County. Professor John Stoddard was the first principal of the school from 1855 to 1856. Kate E. Worrest is Sallies former roommate, fellow student and Assistant Teacher of Reading, Geography and Mental Arithmetic from Pequea in Lancaster County. Mary Rachel Dunwoodie is believed to a friend from Tredyffrin Township in Chester County along with Mary Jacobs from Caervarvon Township in Lancaster County. A mantilla is a scarf worn over the head and shoulders. Mrs. Varro is the mother of F.J.P. Varro of France, the 1st international student at MSNS.
