Summary Note
Background notes. The Lancaster County Education Society was founded by Thomas H. Burrows in 1851. R. T. Cornwell was a professor of Natural Sciences at the Normal School from 1856 to 1858. Mrs. H. Marie Brooks, the wife of Edward Brooks, was the teacher of Music at the Normal School from 1856 to 1883. Seymore Preston taught and resided in Lancaster City during the middle and late 1850s. Reverend John S. Crumbaugh was appointed the Lancaster County Superintendent in 1856 and was elected to the office in 1857. He held that position until his death in January of 1859 at age 28. John Bradys Hotel was located in Millersville. The owner, John Brady, was a member of the board of trustees at the Normal School. John Commons was from Upper Oxford Township in Chester County.
