Background note. The Shoemakers were friends and neighbors of Sallies from Homeville. D. Wesley Bartine was a student of the Normal School from 1856 to 1857 and resided near Oakford, Bensalem Township in Bucks County. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lamborn was a cousin of Sallie's from Liberty Square in Lancaster County. Mr. W. A. Smiley and Mrs. M. B. Smiley were listed in the 1857 school catalog as being students from West Middletown in Washington County. Annie M. Whitson was a student from Christiana in Lancaster County.
