Biographical / Historical
Camilla Ella Williams was born 18 October 1919 in Danville, Va. She became the first black American woman to appear on stage in a major American opera house when she sang the title role in Madame Butterfly at the New York City Opera on 14 May 1946. She was also the first African American appointed as professor of voice at Indiana University where she taught from 1977 to 1997. She died 29 January 2012 in Bloomington, Ind.
