Biographical information
Edward Matthews, born in 1904, was a pioneering African-American opera singer. He first appeared as Ignatius of Loyola in Thomson's [i]Four Saints in Three Acts[/i] in 1934, reprising his role in 1952 when the opera was presented on Broadway. He is also known as Jake the fisherman in Gershwin's [i]Porgy and Bess[/i], first appearing in this role in 1935. Matthews died in 1954.
