Biographical / Historical
Born in New Orleans on 26 October 1911, she became known as "The Queen of Gospel" with her powerful contralto voice. She was one the most influential gospel singers in the world and was a civil rights activist. She recorded over 30 albums during her career. She died 27 January 1972 in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
