Biographical / Historical

African-American novelist, anthropologist and folklorist was born 7 January 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama and died 28 January 1960 in Saint Lucie County, Florida. She earned an Associate degree from Howard University in 1920 and a B.A. in Anthropology from Barnard Colloge in 1927. In 1934 she established a school of dramatic arts at Bethune-Cookman College.
