Biographical / Historical
The American music critic, music editor, composer and music educator was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1885 and died 25 January 1974 in Los Angeles. She was the first African American woman to receive a masters degree in the United States. She composed over 200 works, was a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance and co-founded the National Association of Negro Musicians.
