Biographical / Historical
John Birks Gillespie, jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer and occasional singer, was born 21 October 1917 in Cheraw, SC. His contributions to world of jazz were huge. He wong a Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and Kennedy Center Honor. He died 6 January 1993 in Englewood, NJ.
