Biographical / Historical

She was born 25 August 1927 in Sliver, SC. She attended Florida A&M University and was awarded the Associated Press Female Athelte of the Year. She was the first African-American athlete of either gender to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956 she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title. She eventually won five Grand Slam titles: U.S. Open (1957 and 1958); Wimbledon (1957 and 1958) and Roland Garros (1956). In 1957 and 1958 she was the top-ranked U.S. women's tennis player. Later in life she turned to professional golf and was the first African American to join the LPGA. In 1971 she was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame. She died 28 September 2003 in East Orange, NJ.
