Biographical / Historical

Mattiwilda was born in Atlanta, Georgia 11 July 1925, an coloratura soprano and one of the first black singers to enjoy a major international career in opera. She won the International Music Competition in Geneva, Switzerland in 1951 and then made her professional operatic debut at the Holland Festival at the Nightingale in Stravinsky's The Nightingale in 1952. She retired from the stage in 1974, accepting a teaching position at the University of Texes, where she was the first African-American on the faculty. She went on to teach voice at Howard University.
