Biographical information
Reri Grist, American coloratura soprano, was born 29 February 1932 in New York City. She was one of the pioneer African-American singers in opera, enjoying a major international career. She played Consuelo in the original production of Leonard Bernstein's musical [i]West Side Story[/i]. Her official operatic debut came in 1959 at the Santa Fe Opera in [i]Die Fliedermaus[/i] playing the role of Adele. Her European debut came in 1960 and her Metropolitan Opera debut came in 1966. She closed her operatic career in 1991.
