Biographical information

She was born Apr. 25, 1917, in Newport News, Va., according to birth certificate and school records; most biographies give her birthdate as 1918. She died 15 June 1996 in Beverly Hills, Ca. She was known as the "First Lady of Song," "Queen of Jazz," and "Lady Ella" and had a vocal range that covered three octaves. She received the following awards: Presidential Medal of Freedomnt, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, National Medal of Arts, Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year, Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo, Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female, Kennedy Center Honor, George Peabody Medal, NEA Jazz Master Award, George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Artist, Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance, Female.
