Biographical / Historical

Born 17 July 1935 in Brox, New York, her given name was Carol Diann (or Diahann) Johnson. She had a long successful career that included television, the stage and singing. She was the African American woman to star in her own TV series, [i]Julia[/i], which premiered in 1968. She attended the Manhattan School of Performing Arts and made her Broadway debut in 1954 in [i]The House of Flowers[/i]. That same year she appeared in the film [i]Carmen Jones[/i].
