Biographical / Historical

Singer, entertainer and motion picture actress was born 29 March 1918 in Southampton County, Virginia and died 17 August 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She made her Broadway debut in 1946 in St. Louis Woman and won a Tony Award for the title role in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly! in 1968.
